Social media has become such a prevalent part of everyday life. It’s a great way to connect with others and put you and your work out there for others to see. When used in the right way, social media can be a great tool for any business or company, but much of what is commonly thought about social media is wrong. With any new or emerging idea, concept, or technology, misconceptions are to be expected until it becomes more well known. In the meantime, we've debunked some of the most common myths below so you too can be 'in the know'.
1. I need to be using every type of social media platformEvery social media platform is different. Different platforms have different uses, features, and audiences and it’s important to keep this in mind when creating content to go out. To be successful on social media, take the time to create different posts specific to each social platform.
3. I’m automatically successful if I have a lot of followersJust because you have a lot of followers doesn’t mean your social media site is successful. You can have a lot of followers but it’s important to think about how loyal these followers truly are. They might be following your content, but if they're not engaged with your brand, there's a possibility they may never be your customers or clients. You can have a smaller following but with higher engagement and your ideal customer base, which is ultimately more valuable than having thousands of followers who will never buy anything from you or utilize your services.
4. I’ll see results from my social media pages right awayBuilding a strong social media presence takes time, effort, and consistency. It’s okay if you don’t see results right away. Continue to post regularly, connect with your followers, and create engaging posts that get people interested and the results you want will follow.
When it comes down to it, you need to utilize the platforms that suit the need of you and your target audience, and you need to be posting content your followers will find value in. Remember, just because you have a large following doesn't mean you're done. You need your following to be engaging with your content by liking, commenting, or sharing it. If you're going to use social media to push a product, make sure you're educational and informative and not pushy or annoying.
If you follow these tips, your social media strategy will be well on its way to getting you the results you desire.
